History: Albert Mason is the scion of Anglo-German immigrants to America. His father, a doctor and amateur scientist was a pillar of the community, who ensured Albert received a good education and made prevision for Albert to attend Columbia University. Unfortunately, Albert's father died before Albert began his degree, but Albert still pursued his studies in Chemistry.

It was during his time at Columbia that Albert became interested in photography, first through the chemistry required in the development and fixing process, but then in the art. He fell in with a bohemian crowd of artists, including painters, writers, poets, and other photographers. It was during this artistic awakening that something else in Albert stirred, and he fell in love with another young man at University. They had a wonderful time, spending long hours in museums and libraries, walking and talking about everything and nothing, and Albert thought that his happiness would last forever. In the weeks leading up to their graduation, Albert's beau told him that his parents had arranged for him to court a young lady from another good family and that they would almost certainly be married in the summer. As such, Albert and he would have to stop seeing each other. Albert was heartbroken, and while he continued his studies, and earned his degree, it was not with the same gusto.

But time heals, and Albert moved on. He became interested in wildlife photography years later, after the famous hunter Gus MacMillan invited him to take photographs of him with some of his prized kills. Appalled by the sheer amount of skins, stuffed animals, glass-eyed trophies, and the man's utter disregard for the lives of those animals, Albert began his quest to photograph as much of the beauty of American wildlife as he can, before it was destroyed forever.

It is at this point he meets Arthur Morgan, in West Elizabeth, and Arthur helps him recover his bag from a coyote. He is clearly taken with Arthur straight away, and when they meet again through the course of the game, Albert clearly regards Arthur as a good man. Albert has no reason not to think highly of Arthur, as despite any previous player choices about low or high honour behaviours, the game mechanics will only allow the player to help Albert, rather than harm him or impede his work.

Personality:
  • Foolish - Albert often refers to himself as such and while he clearly has a great deal of book learning, he is also very naïve. He persistently puts himself in dangerous situations- such as going out to photograph wolves and alligators at close proximity without any weapons, but also by trusting strangers such as Arthur Morgan without any hesitation, even though Arthur tells him that he's "worse than the wolves".
  • Bossy - While Albert does ask for Arthur's help, it is done so in such a way that does not allow for any arguing. In their first meeting, Albert briskly orders Arthur to stand on a certain spot, neatens his outfit, and then takes a photograph of him. He also ropes him into herding alligators for him to photograph, expecting Arthur to do as he's bid. He gives Arthur an impromptu lecture about the evils of hunting for sport while Arthur rows, clearly hoping to impress upon him the importance of protecting wildlife, no matter how dangerous.
  • Self-deprecating -  Albert is his own biggest critic. Not only frequently calling himself a fool, but also saying he has little photographic talent, despite the praise Arthur and Dutch lavish on the photographs he takes.
  • Hyper-fixated - Albert gets easily caught up in his work, failing to taken any real notice on what is going on around him, making little of the dangers surrounding him, although he jumps each and every time Arthur meets him, surprised by the other man's approach, never mind how noisy Arthur or his horse are. His fixation also allows him some moments of real insight, such as his discussion with Arthur on the way killers, both human and animal, are romanticised after death. This is extremely poignant considering the events of RDR2.
  • Kind - Albert is full of praise and thanks for Arthur, grateful for his help and his companionship, and welcoming his input. He also repeatedly tells Arthur he is a gentleman, despite Arthur's protests that he is anything but. In thanks, Albert presents Arthur with a gift of a photographic print, a memento of their second meeting, which he carries with him in the hope of giving to Arthur should they meet again.
  • Driven - Albert is clearly well-off, well-spoken, well-dressed, and yet he removes himself from the comforts of civilisation in order to take photographs of dangerous animals with no protection or company, save from his horse and occasionally Arthur Morgan. He speaks passionately about wildlife and the environment, and bemoans the way people treat the world around them. From both word and deed, is clear he cares deeply for his cause.
Powers and Abilities:  Albert is well educated and well spoken, he is a capable chemist. He understands a great deal about flora and fauna. Otherwise, he has no special talents, abilities nor powers.

Inventory: Albert brings with him:
  • a large, unwieldy box camera on a tripod and 1 spare glass plate
  • a photograph of Arthur Morgan

Samples: one, two, three
